Mountainville Fall Math Facts Challenge
Mountainville academy will be having a “Math Facts Challenge” starting next Monday, August 30.   The focus is on practicing math facts at home.   Students will set a goal to practice their math facts 60 minutes a week and will have a chart to track their progress.   Prizes will be awarded to everyone who participates.  Chick Fil A has agreed to donate 700 kid’s meals to Mountainville academy for those students who participate.  The school has FREE use of the award winning TIMEZ ATTACK game until Mid September.  This is a computer game where students can practice their times tables. http://www.bigbrainz.com/DownloadSchools.html The password is student.  Every student can download the program at their home and play the video game which teaches multiplication tables.  The video game usually costs $50.00 so this is a valuable free trial they have given to the school and the students. There is a list of useful websites on the form but teachers may also want to print out additional math facts worksheets for students to take home. This challenge is to be done completely at home.  The only things that teachers need to do are to encourage their students to practice. You’ll be getting the forms in your box within the next day or two. Please contact Jen Wilson with any questions.

Japanese Classes
After-school Japanese Classes!  We are trying to determine if there is an interest in having after-school Japanese classes offered at Mountainville Academy.
The course would cover the following:
• Learning the Japanese language and culture through fun activities (games, role plays, songs, picture books, origami, etc.)
• Basic Conversation (greetings, self-introduction, useful sentences for traveling in Japan.)  Pronunciation works
• Recognition of some Hiragana, and Katakana (2 forms of Japanese Alphabet.)
• Exchanging letters with Japanese students (optional.)

This after-school activity would be for students in 4th-8th grade, be 12-15 weeks in length and have a small fee associated with it.  If you think your student would be interested, please email fso@mountainvilleacademy.org.

Miss Frei’s Class
We are still looking for a co-room mom for Miss. Frei's class.  If someone is interested, have them email me at rachelle_stubbs@yahoo.com

School T-Shirt Contest
It is once again time for the spirit T-shirt Contest. The theme for this year is “I am a Leader.” The T-shirt this year will be on a navy T-shirt, the design will be a two color design (black and white).  Designs are due by Sept. 3rd for Middle School Students that are interested in designing the T-shirt. Please turn submissions in to Mrs. Emmalee Powell. Shirts will be available for order after Labor Day.

Green House Help Needed!
We are in need of several adults to help us finish up our green house next week.  We are hoping to put the plastic on the green house on Tuesday or Wednesday after school.  This will require 5-6 adults.  Please contact Becky Garzella, bgarzella@yahoo.com, or Greg Hadlock, ghadlock@mountainvilleacademy.org, if you are available to volunteer.

Attention 6th grade parents
We are still in need of some parent help to coordinate the 6th grade SPACE CAMP field trip.  Please contact Debby Llewelyn at fso@mountainvilleacademy.org to volunteer or request more information.

Parents of 8th Graders
If you are interested in having your student attend the 2010-11 8th grade American History Tour we will be having a parent meeting on Sept. 8th, 2010 at 3:30 in the Library. It will be a short (less than 30 min) presentation that will discuss the itinerary, Snack Shack, Payment information and Mr. Thayne will answer any questions that you may have. If you are interested in having your student attend, and are unable to make it, please send your student or contact Mr. Thayne via email. His email address is jthayne@mountainvilleacademy.org
We are looking forward to having a great experience!

Storytelling
On August 31, International Storyteller, Antonio Sacre, will entertain us with fantastic stories from around the world.  This will be the kick-off for our third annual Mountainville Storytelling Festival.  You’ve heard and loved the student tellers for the past two years – now it is your turn to tell stories!  Please read the attached information and turn in the signed portion to the office by September 9th.  It’s going to be a great year of stories.  Please join us!

Science Excitement
NASA's Science Outreach has accepted an invitation from Orem Library and Timpanogos Storytelling Festival to come to Utah!  There is a lot of excitement about Todd Barber coming to Orem with the Saturn-Cassini program from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

On Wednesday, September 1, at the Orem Library, at 7 pm, Mr. Barber will speak on the highlights and memorable moments of his career working on Galileo, Mars and the Deep Space mission.   He will present images of recent findings from his ongoing Cassini Equinox Mission studying Saturn, its belts and the planet's 53 moons.

Todd will review interesting and unusual experiences in his career as a NASA scientist working on Galileo, Mars and Deep Space missions.  He will present audio-visual highlights and recent findings of his current Cassini Equinox Mission (the spacecraft that views Saturn's 53 moons).

Todd Barber, Award-winning, NASA Propulsion Engineer:
• Lead impactor on Deep Space mission (a la "Star Trek") of near-Earth asteroid, Braille
• Award-winning engineer on launching Galileo to Jupiter Orbit
• Engineer on several other Mars projects including Rover.
• Fun Fact:  Todd worked as the lead impactor propulsion engineer on Deep Impact, which successfully crashed into Comet Tempel-1 on Independence Day, 2005, at twenty-three-thousand miles per hour!!

This mission included flybys of a near-Earth asteroid, Braille, and a comet named Borrelly.

Mr. Barber is a fan of storytelling and has attended the national festival for the last few years.  Todd Barber and his team of NASA/JPL scientists have found storytelling to be a great tool in their career as they do student outreach and public events representing NASA's space missions.    Alice Wessen, Cassini team manager and human resources manager, has implemented many programs and opportunities where the art of storytelling and the science of the propulsion laboratory meet hand-in-hand.  The NASA team has attended a storytelling festival for several years as they do student and teacher outreach programs.

He will attend the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival after he presents at school and public events for three days in Utah.

Todd worked on the Galileo project for over seven years.  His primary responsibility was getting Galileo into Jupiter's orbit on December 7, 1995 and received NASA's Exceptional Achievement Award for his work on Galileo Program.  Mr. Barber also worked on the Space Infra-Red Telescope Facility (SIRTF) mission and on the Stardust mission, as well as the Mars Sample Return mission.  He also worked three years on the Deep Space One mission, the first NASA mission to use electric propulsion (a la “Star Trek”). Todd worked as the lead impactor propulsion engineer on Deep Impact, which successfully crashed into Comet Tempel-1 on Independence Day, 2005, at twenty-three-thousand miles per hour!  This mission included flybys of a near-Earth asteroid, Braille, and a comet named Borrelly.

Art and science meet with Todd Barber; he loves them both.  With almost two decades experience at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory on several missions with Galileo, Mars and Saturn he also is a composer of church choral music, with two pieces published to date.  He sings professionally and plays the piano.  Mr. Barber is a native of Wichita, Kansas, and attended MIT between 1984 and 1990, obtaining B.S. and M.S. degrees in aerospace engineering, with a humanities concentration in music.

Volunteer Opportunity
Parents, if you didn't get to sign up as a classroom helper at back to school night and would like to help in your child's class, please call Rachelle Stubbs (801-796-6486) or email rachelle_stubbs@yahoo.com your name, phone number, child's teacher and your volunteer interests (parties, book orders, field trips, classroom help, etc.).  She will forward the information to your child's room mom.
