MOUNTAINVILLE ACADEMY APPLAUDS 8TH GRADE MATH TEAM
Among its numerous successes, Mountainville Academy can count the great achievement of its students in the Utah State Math Contest. Held March 18, 2009, the Utah State Math Contest included more than 2200 junior high and high school students representing 146 schools across the state, both small and large. The 8th grade team from Mountainville Academy was awarded 2nd place in the small school division.
The team of five, Colton Lindstrom, Jacob Heuer, Savannah Norton, Dana Sorensen, and Ryan Moe, with alternates Sydney Curtin and McKenzie Morgan, attend Mountainville Academy’s advanced Algebra 2 math class. Almost all of them have attended Mountainville Academy since the school opened its doors in the fall of 2006, and have been taught through the highly acclaimed Saxon Math program. Saxon Math has a proven track record in its effectiveness in teaching math for skill mastery and skill retention, as well as a deeper understanding of math concepts.
Mountainville Academy Administrative Director and math teacher Emma Bullock commended the students for their perseverance and diligence in preparing for the highly competitive exam. “Teaching this class has been what every teacher dreams of,” Bullock said of her students. “They are self-motivated learners, pro-active and always trying to get things right. Their gift for mathematics combined with their work ethic makes them an incredible class.”
Mrs. Bullock also congratulated 7th graders Michael Rossi, Granite Tait, Spencer Curtis, Mitchell Baker, and Richard Collings for their participation in the Utah State Math Contest. Of the 10 Mountainville Academy students who participated in the contest, 4 of them scored individually in the top 50 for their grade and division.
Mountainville Academy is a charter school making a positive difference in the lives of students. As another choice in public education, Mountainville Academy has been especially focused on improving students’ math education. MOUNTAINVILLEACADEMY CELEBRATING NEW CAMPUS
Mountainville Academy, a state-approved charter school, is pleased to announce the completion of their new campus in Alpine, Utah. A ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house will be held on Thursday, June 7th at 6:00 p.m. at 195 South Main Street in Alpine, Utah.
"Although the physical structure is not the core of Mountainville Academy, it's wonderful to finally have the schoolhouse the Founders envisioned. The school now has a facility equal in standard and quality to its curriculum and vision. This beautiful structure serves as the showcase for the learning that takes place inside its walls, “said Mr. Wade Glathar, Director of Mountainville Academy.
Mountainville Academy has patterned its new building’s architecture after the old Alpine schoolhouse, originally constructed in 1899 and demolished in 1968. “Mountainville's new campus honors Alpine's heritage by following the architecture of our former school and will give students in town another option in pursuing a quality education,’ said Hunt Willoughby, Mayor of Alpine. Mountainville Academy’s new campus boasts a nearly 2000 square foot library. Its certified librarian and parent volunteers have already catalogued many donations of books received from parents and friends of the school. The new school building also features a gymnasium, two art rooms (kiln-ready), two music rooms, a science room, and a state-of-the-art computer lab.
Mountainville Academy provides a tuition-free choice in public education for grades K through 8. At Mountainville Academy, parents, teachers, and the administration have partnered together to create a school that focuses on academic excellence with smaller class sizes dedicated to the success and well-being of each student. Mountainville Academy is committed to having the best research-based and time-proven curriculum available including the Core Knowledge Sequence, Saxon Math, Shurley English and Reading Mastery Plus programs.
Mountainville Academy has been especially focused on improving students’ math education. “We believe that math education is critical for student success and Saxon Math is the best math program available,” said Emma Bullock, math coordinator for Mountainville Academy. Saxon Math has a proven track record in its effectiveness in teaching math for skill mastery and skill retention, as well as a deeper understanding of math concepts. In laying the foundation for its math program, Mountainville Academy spent many hours last summer assessing each of its 675 students’ math skills. “We want every child to excel and succeed in math. We are determined to improve test scores and increase proficiency,” said Mrs. Bullock.
To maximize student learning, Mountainville Academy is utilizing achievement grouping for both math and reading. Students are put into small, flexible groups within their own academic level regardless of grade level. “The great thing about achievement grouping is that each child gets to succeed at their own level. Those needing the challenge can excel and those requiring extra attention can receive the help they need,” said Mountainville Academy Director, Wade Glathar.
Mountainville Academy distinguishes itself through its commitment to a well-rounded education that includes music, art, and foreign language. Mountainville Academy believes that music improves mental discipline and academic achievement and has created an outstanding music program that includes orchestra and band. Mountainville Academy staff also includes two art teachers, a Spanish teacher, and a physical education teacher. Additionally, Mountainville Academy is committed to character development. “Throughout all of the school’s classes and activities, Mountainville Academy students will be motivated to strengthen their character and exhibit integrity, responsibility and respect for others,” adds Mr. Glathar.
One of the challenges that Mountainville Academy faced was opening the school in a temporary location while its permanent building’s construction was being completed in Alpine, Utah. School staff and parent volunteers helped prepare vacant office buildings for the start of school, putting together an entire school from scratch. Not only did curriculum and materials need to be prepared, but desks and chairs too. From copy machines to two pianos from The Piano Gallery, the parent body and community has shown its support through generous donations.
Whether developing curriculum, working in the classroom or holding a fundraiser, the parents are also there in full force, determined to do whatever it takes to give their children the absolute best education possible. Parents are the founding force behind Mountainville Academy and are actively engaged in the areas of curriculum, library policies, finances, computer technology, donations, grant writing, outreach and more. Rebecca Whitchurch, Board Chairman states, “Student’s thrive when parents and teachers work together with trust and cooperation. This partnership is key to Mountainville Academy’s success.”

VOLUNTEERS’ HARD WORK MAKES MOUNTAINVILLE ACADEMY'S OPENING A RESOUNDING SUCCESS
In the culmination of thousands of hours of volunteer work, MountainvilleAcademy opened for school last week. MountainvilleAcademy, a state-approved charter school in Alpine, Utah and currently located in a temporary facility in American Fork, provides a tuition-free choice in public education for grades K through 8. At Mountainville Academy, parents, teachers, and the administration have partnered together to create a school that focuses on academic excellence with smaller class sizes dedicated to the success and well-being of each student.
Talented teachers and administrators have been working around the clock to get ready for their students – and not just in their classrooms. Teachers have been attending training this summer to hone their skills in the Core Knowledge Sequence, Saxon Math, Shurley English and Reading Mastery Plus programs. MountainvilleAcademy is committed to having the best research-based and time proven curriculum available.
MountainvilleAcademy has been especially focused on improving students’ math education. “We believe that math education is critical for student success and Saxon Math is the best math program available,” said Emma Bullock, math coordinator for MountainvilleAcademy. Saxon Math has a proven track record in its effectiveness in teaching math for skill mastery and skill retention, as well as a deeper understanding of math concepts.
MountainvilleAcademy has partnered with LearnPhase, a company working with the school’s teachers to help them implement a tracking program to monitor student progress in the Reading Mastery Plus program. LearnPhase will help teachers ensure that all children are progressively moving forward to the appropriate reading levels and achievement groups. They will also provide ongoing training for teachers to increase the effectiveness of the program.
MountainvilleAcademy distinguishes itself through its commitment to a well-rounded education that includes music, art, and foreign language. “Music improves mental discipline and academic achievement,” said Angela Grigg, MountainvilleAcademy music teacher. MountainvilleAcademy has already hired two music teachers to create an outstanding music program that includes orchestra, band, and chorale groups. MountainvilleAcademy staff also includes two art teachers, a Spanish teacher, and a physical education teacher. Additionally, MountainvilleAcademy is committed to character development. “Throughout all of the school’s classes and activities, MountainvilleAcademy students will be motivated to strengthen their character and exhibit integrity, responsibility and respect for others,” adds Mr. Glathar.
One of the challenges that MountainvilleAcademy faced was opening the school in a temporary location while its permanent building’s construction is being completed in Alpine, Utah. School staff and parent volunteers helped prepare vacant office buildings for the start of school, putting together an entire school from scratch. Not only did curriculum and materials need to be prepared, but desks and chairs, too. From copy machines to a baby grand Yamaha piano and a digital piano from The Piano Gallery, the parent body and community have shown great support through generous donations.
MountainvilleAcademy is patterning its new building’s architecture after the old Alpine schoolhouse, originally constructed in 1899 and demolished in 1968. “Mountainville’s new campus will honor Alpine’s heritage while taking advantage of technology, curriculum, and fine arts, giving students the necessary skills to prosper in a challenging world,” said Hunt Willoughby, Mayor of Alpine. MountainvilleAcademy will boast a large, spacious library and has already hired a certified librarian who is cataloguing the many donations of books received from parents and friends of the school.
Whether developing curriculum or washing windows, the parents are also there in full force, determined to do whatever it takes to give their children the absolute best education possible. Parents are the founding force behind MountainvilleAcademy and are actively engaged in the areas of curriculum, library policies, finances, computer technology, donations, grant writing, outreach and more. Rebecca Whitchurch, Board Chairman states, “Student’s thrive when parents and teachers work together with trust and cooperation. This partnership is key to MountainvilleAcademy’s success, and one of the founding principles of the school. ”
The goal of charter schools is to provide additional educational options with quality outcomes for students and parents. Charter schools are public schools open to all students. They operate on public funds without tuition. Mark Cluff of the Utah State Board of Education said, “The charter school movement is demonstrating that partnership between parents and educators can create innovative and outstanding opportunities for Utah students. MountainvilleAcademy is raising the bar in pioneering these new roads to academic success.” Dr. John Broberg, Director of Charter Schools for the Utah State Office of Education said, “Congratulations on your opening. I am thrilled at the progress that MountainvilleAcademy has made this past year. When the State Charter Board approved this charter they knew it was a superior plan; but what is exciting is seeing this plan being put into action for the benefit of students’ lives.”
MountainvilleAcademy has openings in several grade levels. To learn more about MountainvilleAcademy and its vision of academic excellence, please visit www.mountainvilleacademy.org. MOUNTAINVILLE ACADEMY APPROVED
BY UTAH STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION
Alpine, Utah - A new charter school, MountainvilleAcademy, was approved by the Utah State Board of Education on September 1, 2005 to open its doors in the fall of 2006. The school will be located in the Alpine/Highland area of NorthernUtahCounty and will serve children in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade from all surrounding communities.
The primary focus of MountainvilleAcademy will be to provide a skills-based, explicit and sequential academic environment, with special attention to the Language Arts and Mathematics. “Success in reading and math gives children the tools they need to succeed in all areas of study,” said Rebecca Whitchurch, Chairman of the Mountainville Academy Board of Trustees. “Academic success builds confidence in students and instills a desire for lifelong learning and personal achievement.”
The school will utilize research-based and proven curricula to elevate the academic and personal achievement of its students, and will offer a small teacher-student ratio, multiple opportunities for parent involvement and most importantly, a clear choice for parents looking for alternative education for their children.
In addition to a solid academic program, the school will focus on positive character development, emphasizing virtues such as integrity, personal responsibility and respect for others. The school will also offer an expanded curriculum to provide a well-rounded education for its students, including instruction in music, art, and foreign language.
A charter school is a public school whose operation is autonomous from the local school district and based on a contract with the State Board of Education. It is funded by the government, in much the same way other public schools are, and as such are tuition-free.
All who are interested are invited to explore www.MountainvilleAcademy.org for more information about this exciting new school offering quality, tuition-free education. A public meeting is scheduled for October 29, 2005, 10:00 a.m. at Alpine City Hall.
